American's Problem: Obesity

Obesity is the number one public health risk America (“Obesity Is Public Health Concern“). As stated in the movie “Super Size Me,“ which is a highly known documentary about what fast food can do to one’s body, America is said to be the fattest nation in the world. Yet individuals who became obese from fast food restaurants blame them for the cause of their weight. The cause of obesity is not the fast food restaurant‘s fault, but the individuals who consume it everyday.  The individuals are responsible for their weight because they know that fast food is high in fat and oils, but still choose to eat it daily. This world is full of ignorant people that  just want to have somebody else to blame their problems for, but in reality, it is them and no one else. Nearly one hundred million Americans today are considered either overweight or obese, which is more than 60 percent of all adults in the United States. If Americans continue to eat like this, there is no telling what will happen to our population and the serious health risks that will occur. Most Americans today have no self control when it comes to their eating habit. It is simply because they have no time to cook, fast food is inexpensive, or just the fact the they are lazy, hence the name “lazy/stupid American,” for all of the crap they consume. Restaurants need to have more healthy meal, though we shouldn’t go out to eat a healthy meal when we can do it at home. America needs to put on their Nikes and get down to business. A simple walk around the park or 20 minute work out is all that is needed for us to become a slimmer, and healthier person.

  1. I agree with you, about how unhealthy and lazy Americans are. I for myself workout everyday to stay in shape and look better everyday, but thats just me, I like to look good and be fit. I cant speak for all of Americans but when they don't choose to workout or run because they "have no time," I just ask them one question, "how many hours do we have per day?" So time should never be an issue on why people are not working out, but i can understand why some people cant workout because illness or injuries, and thats fine. I just can't stand people who say they have no time to cook so they rather eat fast food that isn't healthy at all. Then when the start getting fat or having health problems, they blame the fast food companies which yes they do contribute to those problems, but in the end its the consumer's fault. Because i'm pretty sure all of the fast food products have nutrition facts, and its not that hard to tell which products are healthy and unhealthy, so their should be no excuses saying "I didn't know it was unhealthy." And in todays time there are so much healthy food you can buy at the market, and heat up in like 10 minutes and takes no skill at all to cook and no time. People who just say they have no time are just lazy, its just ridiculous. Americans should start taking the stairs instead of elevators or escalators, they should walk to get the mail and not take a car, just simple things can make a big difference in health, I hope Americans change their ways.

  2. I agree with you 100 percent. It was very surprising to hear about how we (America) are the fattest country in the world. I agree with the argument that people who are over weight want to blame other people for their actions. And as blunt as that sounds it is very true. I was doing some research and found that that most people who have a lot of weight are the ones who are mostly out of money or at a loss in their finances. We spend a lot of money on fast food. Everyone does it, I guess u can say it is apart of Americas tradition. Last year America spent 134 billion dollars on fast food. On average that is about 11.6 billion dollars a week. And that calculates to around 1.6 billion a week. That is a lot of money being spent on food. Especially fast food in which is not healthy for you. Many Americans have the state of mind as “if I am going to spend more money on food that’s healthy for me, why not save money and spend less money and eat fat”. Fast food corporations have been and are only getting more and more successful throughout the course of time. I think it is time we stop eating fatty food, and start consuming foods that will benefit our lives.

  3. I agree wholeheartedly with your post Tran. I believe people should not blame fast food for their obesity, plus I think blaming it is a waste of time. The fast food industry is a billion dollar industry and there is nothing we can really do to stop them, no lawsuit is going to change that. Many fast food giants may have changed ingredients to appeal to the more "healthy" crowd, but their products are still unhealthy nonetheless. Fast food industries use cheap materials to make their products to increase their income, that is part of why they are so successful, that and their cheap prices and convenient locations.
We live in a capitalistic country where their should be little to none government influence, so no bill or law will not and should not be able to contain these industries. No lawsuit or protest can stop these monster companies, they haven't really affected them now and I don't see them being affected anytime soon. The best way to fight them is to ignore them, and you will find yourself as a healthier person. People need to stop blaming fast food companies for their problems, because they are just doing their thing and they always will be. Americans need to leave their fast food love, because it will not change for them.

  4. The movie “Super Size Me” is a great example to portray obesity in America. I definitely agree that obesity is not caused by the actual foods of restaurants and is, in fact, due to the actual person’s intake of it. Nowadays, it is all about immediate pleasure and fast food is what satisfies those who crave these wants. Yes, having no time to cook as Tran says, can definitely be an excuse; however I believe that a person is never TOO busy that they must eat out every day. If people would be more controlled of themselves, these problems wouldn’t have greatly taken on a major health concern of Americans. Tran stated that “If Americans continue to eat like this; there is no telling what will happen to our population and the serious health risks that will occur.” I most certainly agree with this statement and on a website called obesity in America (http://www.obesityinamerica.org/newsroom/upload/Maternal-Ghrelin-Deficiency-release.pdf) a research stated that obesity in woman can lead to infertility in the next generation because the levels of the hormone ghrelin are low in obese women. This will definitely place a toll on population and also more health issues since the women who experience this must be obese and with women being obese, men are as well. In restaurants, when a huge plate of delicious food is sitting in front of you, it becomes quite hard to exist. I feel that the proportion sizes that are served in restaurants that Americans consume are much too big for what is said to be one serving, causing people to eat much more than they should without really realizing it. I agree with Tran that Americans need to “put on their Nikes” and start living a much more active life, otherwise our population will decrease, as the obesity website states, and Americans will all become obese and extremely unhealthy.
